A fun Sunday at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art

One of the great benefits of living in the city is that our children have over 90 of NYC’s best-loved museums, gardens, zoos and historic houses as their playground…

If you are planning a fun experience with the family, is too hot to walk outside, or even if you are suffering from cabin fever, taking our children to one of this cultural experiences is always a total hit!

Today, we chose the The Met Museum-

My children love going there and learning about ancient pyramids and mummies so we picked the Egypt Art exhibit to walk around for an hour or two.

The Secret World Inside You Explores the Microbial Human

The Secret World Inside You exhibit at AMNH

Today we took Alejandro and his friend Mason to this fantastic exhibition at the American Museum of National History Although, we thought the exhibit might of been for older children [and they are only 4 years old] but quickly found out that this educates young and old about the microbes that live in and on each of us.  By the time we got home Alejandro was able to tell me things like – What are these organisms? How do we get them? Where do they live? What do they do? How do they influence our health and behavior…

Explore the human microbiome and find out how rapidly evolving science is reshaping our ideas about human health.

Furthermore, we were able to learn that our bodies are home to approximately 100 trillion bacteria living inside us and on us—a vast community known as the microbiome. The Secret World Inside You  exhibit allows you to explores the rapidly evolving science that is revealing the complexities of the human microbiome and reshaping our ideas about human health, offering new perspectives on common health problems including allergies, asthma, and obesity.

A fun summer day in the city

During the summer days a fun way to spend your afternoon with friends (with kids)  specially if they are visiting from out of town is to enjoy Central Park, and while at it pay a visit to the famous Victoria Gardens. This fun amusement park  is especially wonderful for younger children. Our group had 4-8yrs old kids and they had a total blast!  The rides are contained in a small enclosed space so you don’t have to worry about kids wandering off like at Coney Island, and there’s little walking between attractions. Most of the rides are gentle (a few have height requirements), and there aren’t any teens rushing through the crowd. Plus, you can’t beat the location at Wollman Rink in Central Park, just steps from the zoo, Heckscher Playground and the famous Central Park carousel. They also have a cash foodcourt and a couple fun food karts for the kids to snack on.

Dear “Exhausted Mom”….

you are not aloneEarlier today [at the park] as I sat on the bench watching my six year old glide through the monkey bars over and over… a mom came over and sat next to me. All of the sudden, I heard her burst into tears… My reaction was to ask if she was ok?!? She did not answer ( and she hid inside her scarf) I didn’t know what to do! I paused for a second and thought… should I run away?!?! But then… what if she really needed help… so I sat and waited … Then I asked again if I could help or do something?? .. As she came out off under her scarf and with tears in her eyes she asked me if I was a mom? [ I nodded] Her daughter was 2… And she was exhausted! I have not slept in two years, she said…. Will I ever get my body back? She asked … Will I ever be able to hold a normal conversation that is not about playdates and diapers? Will I ever feel sexual again? Sometimes, I secretly wish I could go back to work to my fabulous office! I love my child but I need my adult life back and everyone makes me feel so guilty about it! She said [as she wept] For the first time I just stayed quite and listened… I just wanted to hug her and tell her everything was going to be ok… But then my son fell off the monkey bar and I had to run to him… He was ok… but when I turned back “Exhausted Mom” was gone… So I decided to write her this note…
